Parliamentary election July 2024

His Majesty King Charles has granted permission to dissolve Parliament for a General Election, to be held on Thursday 4 July 2024; elections to appoint members of parliament (MPs) for the York Central and York Outer parliamentary constituencies will take place.

Alongside the General Election, there will be a by-election for Hull Road Ward.

In the run up to the election, we'll provide more information for local residents including:

  • legal notices, such as the 'Statement of persons nominated'
  • a list of polling stations

Working at the General Election

We're recruiting paid staff to work in various roles for the General Election on Thursday 4 July. Email: staff.election@york.gov.uk to register your interest and include your full name, email address and postal address. We'll then contact you to let you know the roles available, rates of pay and hours that you'll be required to work.

Unfortunately, we cannot employ anyone under the age of 18 because of the hours that you'll be required to work.

Changes to voting

The Elections Act 2022 changed election processes; you need photographic voter ID to vote in person at a polling station, support for disabled voters has been improved, and absent voting, postal and proxy voting have changed, alongside EU citizens' voting and candidacy rights and overseas elector updates.
