Air conditioning units and refrigeration noise

Using an air conditioning unit has the potential to cause a noise nuisance to your neighbours, so you will usually require planning permission to install one. Approved applications will include terms which control noise.

Air conditioning units which aren't properly maintained can develop noise problems over time, so we recommend that appliances are regularly serviced and routinely checked for correct operation.

Noise levels from refrigeration should be no less than 5 decibels below the background noise level.
