Our retention schedule sets out:
- the different types of information held by the council
- how long information is kept
- reasons for keeping information
- what happens when we no longer needs to keep information (for example, secure and confidential disposal, or transfer to York Explore Archives for permanent preservation)
Our retention schedule applies to all records, regardless of format, and is arranged in sections relating to our Service Areas.
View the City of York council retention schedule via York Open Data; the information is presented in Microsoft Excel format find out how to request an alternative format.
We aim to adhere to the retention schedule wherever possible. However, there are some circumstances where we may not always be able to do so; we’re working to remedy this.
There are also some exemptions to the retention schedule, which are implemented on a temporary basis, often associated with ongoing cases, a court order or similar legal action, a current Freedom of Information request, or a Data Subject Access Request.
Contact our Data Protection officer if you have any queries about our retention schedule.
