We offer a number of options to make paying your bill, or paying for our services, as convenient as possible. In most cases you'll need your payment reference number.

Pay online
You can pay a number of council bills and invoices online, including:
- council tax, business rates and rent
- health and social care
- parking and traffic charges
- waste and recycling charges
- business licences
- other invoices

Bank payments
You can arrange bill payments from your bank account, using internet banking or telephone banking, to set up BACS payments or standing orders.

Pay by Direct Debit
Make regular payments by Direct Debit:

Pay by credit card or debit card
If you wish to make a payment by debit or credit card you can:

- pay business rates online
- pay council rent online
- call our council tax, business rates or housing team, via our customer centre

Pay by cash or cheque
You can make payments by cash or cheque at any Post Office, or by cash at any shop or garage displaying the PayPoint symbol for your:
We can't accept cash payments at our Customer Centre.
Pay by post
Send cheques or postal orders to the address shown on the front of your bill.
Cheques should be made payable to 'City of York Council'. Please quote your name, address and payment reference number on the back of the cheque.
If you require a receipt, please enclose a stamped addressed envelope.
We cannot accept post dated cheques.

Council tax bills can be set up with the following instalment plans:

- 10 instalments
- 12 instalments
Most bills are set to 10 instalments; you can change your payment arrangements online, simply set up or amend a council tax Direct Debit. If you’re unable to use our online services contact Customer Services on telephone: 01904 551558 for support.
