The Early Talk for York approach trains staff in early years settings and primary schools to spot any issues with children's speech, language and communication.
The approach then works with the child and their family or carers, and other professionals (including speech therapists) if necessary, to address any issues and support better learning and life chances.
Evidence for Early Talk for York
In a pilot project working with schools and early years providers in the west of York, children in the pilot group showed significantly improved speech and communication skills at age 5, compared to children who did not receive the same programme of support through the ETFY approach.
This improvement was seen despite the negative impact we know the COVID-19 pandemic had on many children.
The approach is now being rolled out across York to more early years providers and primary schools, and we want everyone to get involved.
If you are a parent or carer looking at pre-school or school provision for a child, ask potential providers about Early Talk for York.
