Prosecution cases brought by City of York Council, such as those relating to health and safety or food safety offences, are dealt with by Public Protection officers.
In every such case where a defendant either pleads guilty or is convicted after trial, we will apply for full payment of the costs incurred in bringing the prosecution, to avoid this cost being passed to local tax payers.
The court is under a duty to award the costs in full if they are satisfied they are reasonable.
Our costs are calculated purely on the work involved on any individual case and will show:
- time spent
- level of staff involved
- the charging hourly rates for that level of staff
See details of current Public Protection officer court fees.
If the court pays less than the amount required to cover our costs, they have to state in open court why they are making a reduced payment.
