York's first supported housing strategy (2014 to 2019) sets out our overarching vision to ensure the right supported housing options are available at the right time and the right place for those that need them. A refreshed strategy is being produced during 2025 that will build on the Homelessness and Rough Sleeping Strategy 2024 to 2029 and Adult Social Care All Ages Market Position Statement.
Through this we will aim to increase or maintain independence and to help to prevent future need for services.
There are many different types of households or communities of people who benefit from supported housing. This strategy is based around existing services for:
- older people (aged 55 years and over)
- people with mental health issues and/or learning disabilities
- young people (aged 16 to 25 years)
- offenders or ex-offenders
- people involved in substance misuse (drugs, alcohol and others)
- people who are homeless or threatened with homelessness
Supported housing
Supported housing is defined as housing designed to meet specific needs and in which there is some level of on-site support provided as part of the accommodation offered.
There is a range of supported housing in York for vulnerable members of the community.
