City of York Council’s Air Quality Alert Service sends free air pollution alerts and health advice to those most likely to be affected by air pollution.
Alerts give advanced warning of when air pollution is expected to be higher than usual, up to 3 days ahead.
You can sign up to receive air quality alerts by text, email or voicemail for different areas of York, depending on where you live or work.
If you've been diagnosed by your doctor with asthma, emphysema, bronchitis, heart disease or angina, then you may benefit from this service.
You may also want to receive alerts on behalf of another person, such as an elderly relative, or if you're responsible for young children with respiratory conditions such as asthma.

Alert frequency
Air pollution levels tend to rise on hot, sunny days in summer and cold, still days in winter. Once air pollution levels increase, they often remain high for 2 or 3 days. This is called a pollution episode.
You'll receive alerts when an episode of air pollution is expected. You're likely to receive around 20 alerts per year, depending on air pollution levels. You can choose to receive alerts by text message, recorded voice message or email.
You'll get a message for each day that the pollution episode lasts. Alerts will stop when pollution levels are forecast to be low again, or when you unsubscribe from the service.
What to do when you receive an alert
On the days when air pollution is above normal levels, the alert is designed to help you plan your day ahead to reduce your exposure.
There are several simple steps you can take to reduce the effect of air pollution. These include taking your inhaler with you, taking extra doses of your medication if your symptoms worsen (but not taking more than your doctor has told you to) and avoiding strenuous outdoor activity. Each alert will provide health advice, depending on the level of pollution.
