Busking byelaws
Byelaws made under Section 235 of the Local Government Act I972 by the Council of the City of York for the good rule and government of the City of York and for the prevention and suppression of nuisances.
- In these byelaws “the Council” means the Council of the City of York.
- These byelaws shall apply throughout the City of York.

- no person shall, after being requested to desist by any constable, or by any person annoyed or disturbed, or by any person acting on his behalf:
- by shouting or singing; or
- by playing on a musical instrument; or
- by operating or permitting to be operated any radio, gramophone, amplifier, tape recorder, or similar instrument;
- Provided that this byelaw shall not apply to properly conducted religious services.
- Provided that this byelaw shall not apply to any person holding or taking part in any entertainment held pursuance of a lawful agreement with the Council.
- no person shall, after being requested to desist by any constable, or by any person annoyed or disturbed, or by any person acting on his behalf:
- Any person offending against byelaw 3 shall be liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding level 2 on the standard scale.
- Byelaw number 1 of the byelaws made by the Council on the 29th day of January 1979 in respect of noise nuisance is revoked with effect from the date on which these byelaws shall come into operation.
