Waste management and disposal
If you own or manage a holiday let in York, you must store, safely contain and dispose of any waste that comes from your property in a responsible and lawful manner.
Waste generated by holiday lets is classed as commercial waste, and it is an offence to dispose of commercial waste via a domestic waste collection service.
You are required to have either a commercial waste contract in place, or transport and dispose of commercial waste at a registered waste disposal site. This means you must:
- ensure waste is stored securely on your land
- only use a licensed commercial waste contractor if you arrange to have your waste removed and disposed
- ensure you keep Waste Information receipts (previously known as Waste Transfer Notes) for all commercial waste collections for a period of up to two years. These receipts are proof that you have lawfully transferred your waste
If you yourself transport and dispose of commercial waste at a registered waste disposal site, you can apply for a free, Lower Tier Waste Carrier’s Licence from the Environment Agency.
Recycling efficiently will help reduce the amount of waste your business produces and will reduce the cost of waste removal.
