Waste and recycling
We no longer send waste to landfill in York. Instead, we provide kerbside recycling and household waste collections to every home across the city.
After more than 30 years in operation, the landfill site at Harewood Whin is now used as a sorting and baling depot for recycling, which is then sent to be recycled around the UK and Europe, depending on market demands.
All non-recycled waste from York and North Yorkshire is sent to Allerton Waste Recovery Park (AWRP), located in North Yorkshire. This state-of-the-art facility processes up to 320,000 tonnes of waste per year. AWRP has reduced CO2 emissions associated with the disposal of waste in York by almost 30,000 tonnes per year.
