Garage rental costs
Rent charges vary depending on:
- whether you're a City of York Council tenant
- whether you're a York resident
As well as the rate being dependent on your status, standard or premium charges apply depending on the location of the garage.
Our council garages directory shows the locations of all garages available to rent, and whether the standard or premium charge applies.
Rent is charged on a weekly basis, payable 4 weeks in advance.
Weekly charges:
Charge type | Council tenants | Other York residents | Non-York residents |
---|---|---|---|
Standard charge | £10.00 | £16.00 | N/A |
Premium charge | £12.00 | £37.00 | £47.00 |
On successful application, you'll be required to pay a month’s rent in advance and monthly in advance by Direct Debit thereafter.
If you don't have a bank account that supports Direct Debit, contact the Garages Housing Asset Officer to discuss alternative payment methods.
Let us know immediately if you fall into arrears, as failure to do so could result in the locks being changed.
Giving up the garage
Termination of tenancy will be determined by either party giving 1 week's notice.
The 1 week notice period will be effective from the next Monday following notice being given (or the day notice is given, if on a Monday). The tenancy will then end on the following Sunday.
Contact the Garages Housing Asset Officer to provide notice that you want to give up the garage in writing, or by email to: housing.garages@york.gov.uk, or telephone: 01904 551550 (option 4, option 4).
We require proof that the garage is empty and ready to relet and the keys need to be returned to us. The garage should be left in a clean and tidy condition and we'll require photo evidence to confirm the garage is ready to relet.
If you don't return the keys to the office and we have to change the lock, or remove any contents from the garage, you'll be invoiced for this work.
