If you smell gas, don't:
- turn any electric switches on or off (this includes lights) - this can cause a spark, which could cause an explosion if there is a gas leak.
- use your phone indoors as it could cause a spark
- smoke
- use naked flames
- use the door controlled entry system from your flat
Do:
- turn off the gas supply at the meter, if you can
- open doors and windows to get rid of the gas
- check to see if you have left any gas appliances on or if a pilot light has gone out

Report smelling gas
If you think you smell gas, call the National Grid from a telephone outside your home on Freephone telephone: 0800 111 999. The National Grid also provides safety and emergency guidance.
The National Grid will ensure the leak is not from a gas main. You must stay near your home until an engineer from the National Grid arrives, otherwise they may have to force entry into your home.
A gas contractor will carry out remedial work to gas appliances in your home and switch the appliance back on once repaired.
