The Real Living Wage is a wage rate that is based on the cost of living and is voluntarily paid by businesses. It is set by the Living Wage Foundation and is available to those aged 18 and over.
The Real Living Wage is different to the government-set statutory wage that businesses must pay staff in the UK. The Minimum Wage is the statutory wage for those under 23 years of age, and is based on recommendations from businesses and trade unions, whilst the National Living Wage is the statutory wage for those over 23 years of age, and is a percentage of medium UK earnings.
Paying the Real Living Wage is one of the 10 commitments of the Good Business Charter (GBC). All GBC accredited employers are real living wage employers.
