Find out more about each major development currently being considered, including:

  • Bootham Park - a planning application has been submitted by Enterprise Retirement Living to provide a 170 home independent living retirement community for older people
  • Castle and Eye of York - in February 2022, the council submitted a planning application for a new public space at the Castle and Eye of York, the heart of the masterplan. The design was informed by extensive engagement with residents and businesses about what they want to see in the area
  • Castle Gateway - redevelopment provides the opportunity to create a high quality, mixed-use development and build on the vitality of the city centre
  • Former British Sugar and Manor School sites - planning applications were submitted for residential and community uses in December 2014. We have been working with the developer in order to resolve environmental and design/layout issues
  • Germany Beck - a 'reserved matters' application for housing was approved in 2013
  • Guildhall - proposed reuse of the former council offices to create a serviced office space with café and restaurant alongside the council chamber and Guildhall, which we still use
  • Derwenthorpe - is a mixed tenure, exemplar community of energy efficient homes; construction is currently underway
  • Our City Centre - a new 10 year strategic vision for York city centre was relaunched by the council’s Executive in October 2023. This project will now focus on delivering the vision and there will be further opportunities for residents and businesses to get involved and to help to shape the city centre
  • York Central - a major area for regeneration to the rear of York Railway Station. A collaborative development which includes Network Rail, the National Railway Museum, Homes England and ourselves is progressing investment and delivery for the site. The York Station Gateway master plan plays a key role in the development of York Central
  • Upgrades to York's outer ring road - we've allocated up to £38m for improvements to the A1237 York Outer Ring Road (YORR) in order to reduce congestion
  • Scarborough Bridge Project - a new pedestrian and cycle bridge next to the existing Scarborough (rail) Bridge to introduce a traffic free route between the railway station, city centre and residential suburbs
  • The Haxby Station Project - a plan to reinstate the train station in Haxby
