Syrian Refugee Resettlement (UKRS)
The United Kingdom Resettlement Scheme (UKRS) is open to vulnerable refugees around the world. Individuals coming through this scheme are assessed and referred by the UNHCR according to their criteria, which is based on people’s needs and vulnerabilities. Refugees arriving through this route come from countries including Ethiopia, Iraq, Sudan, Syria, Afghanistan, Eritrea, Somalia, South Sudan, and Yemen.
We work closely with other local authorities, the government, Refugee Council and Migration Yorkshire to help find accommodation and support for refugee families fleeing civil war in Syria.
Once we know families’ specific needs, we work with partners to provide all the necessary support.
A Refugee Worker from the City of York Council’s Refugee Resettlement Team will be assigned so the refugees receive a warm welcome, immediate financial help, all necessary practical support and referrals to access school places, ESOL classes, employment and other relevant services, and ongoing support as required to integrate successfully into life in York. Once the refugee families’ specific needs have been identified, we work with partners to provide all the necessary support.
Housing is a priority; if you're a private landlord or have accommodation, please let us know by contacting YorHome.
