Ousewem, an innovative flood resilience project supporting vulnerable North Yorkshire communities, is proud to release the second video in its compelling series.
The series explores the transformative role of natural flood management (NFM) in building resilient communities. Created in collaboration with The Artery, a champion for creativity and collaboration in North Yorkshire’s rural and coastal communities, the video provides an overview of the modelling that underpin Ousewem’s strategic and practical work.
Building on the success of its first video, the new video, titled NFM tools: modelling, theory and practice, offers an inside look into how we are using modelling in Ousewem to understand water dynamics at a range of spatial scales. The video discusses the real-world application of modelling and how it can help us optimise NFM delivery, bridging innovation with on-the-ground delivery to support diverse catchment-wide solutions.
The Artery brings its expertise in fostering dialogue and creativity to this new production, continuing its collaboration with Ousewem to spark meaningful conversations among practitioners, farmers, landowners, and policymakers. The partnership has evolved to highlight not only the challenges but also the opportunities in addressing land use, flood risk, and community resilience through the lens of strategic NFM.

- the strategic modelling and delivery approach developed by Ousewem, which integrates local knowledge to address both broad environmental challenges and site-specific needs
- the importance of collaboration with landowners and stakeholders in adapting models to real-world conditions and reducing uncertainty in our understanding
The first video in the series, “Overcoming challenges in natural flood management (NFM): Insights from North Yorkshire land managers", explored the vital connections between land use, flood risk, and community resilience, sparking constructive dialogue among farmers and landowners. Ruth Garrett and Billy White, the talented local filmmakers behind the series, have captured the essence of the challenges and opportunities facing North Yorkshire communities.
