Information about 2021 Census
At the time of 2021 Census:
- 202,821 people lived in the York, including 26,694 full time students
- there were 1,828 employees in the food preparation and hospitality trades
- home to the famous street the Shambles, there were 5,644 sales assistants and retail cashiers
- more than 35,000 of you used a car or van to drive to work, although over 34,000 worked from home
- York was made up of 267 different ethnicities
- other than the UK, China was the top country of birth, with Polish the most popular language other than English or Welsh, spoken by 1,344 of you
- there were 1,042 multi-generational households
- 93,192 people said they had no religion
Census day was on 21 March 2021.
This was the first census run predominantly online.
The census included questions about your sex, age, work, health, education, household size and ethnicity.
For the first time there was a question asking people whether they had served in the armed forces, as well as voluntary questions for those aged 16 and over on sexual orientation and gender identity.
Results were made available within 12 months, although personal records will be locked away for 100 years, kept safe for future generations.
