If you have to travel in wintry conditions, the following information can help you stay safe.
Travelling by road
We carry out road gritting (or salting) in conditions of snow, ice and frost.

Cycle routes
We treat off-road council cycle routes with grit in the early stages of winter. We then monitor routes to see if further treatment is necessary.
See winter cycling tips (iTravel York).
Footpaths
Most footpaths are unlikely to be gritted so take extra care when walking in icy conditions.
We only grit priority footpaths which mainly cover city centre areas, depending on how bad the weather is. We clear and treat other well-used footpaths when resources are available.
See further advice on clearing snow and ice from pavements.
Car parks
Car parks are not routinely gritted, so take extra care.
Car park entrances and exits are usually cleared following heavy snow, if resources are available.
York City Walls
York City Walls are closed if ice and snow make them too slippery to walk on safely.
