Our Transport Services

Our Transport Service leads on delivering sustainable transport initiatives; staff working in this area also manage, improve and regulate all the city's traffic and travel demands.

York - a sustainable transport city

York's compact size and flat landscape make it one of the most sustainable transport cities in the country, with high cycling and walking rates, and sustained bus passenger growth.

It's a city:

  • of over 200,000 people - large enough to be nationally recognised but small enough for targeted transport policy adjustments
  • hailed as one of the best places to live in the country and a key tourist destination welcoming 8.9 million visitors a year
  • the right size to be a 'test bed' for delivering 'cutting edge' traffic systems technology
  • where the Park & Ride service (operating from 6 sites) carried over 4.5 million passengers last year and around 1 in 7 residents cycle to work
  • with the political will and passion to ensure easier, accessible travel with the lowest possible environmental impact
  • where over £200m of transport infrastructure is proposed over the next 5 years
  • which is a key hub on the national rail network
  • where the council and bus operators work as part of the Enhanced Partnership to deliver quality public transport options
  • where over 60% of the buses operating in the city are ultra-low emission

Upcoming transport schemes in York

Some of our upcoming major transport projects include:

  • upgrading the A1237 section of the outer ring road
  • the largest public realm scheme in decades at the front of York Railway Station is currently being delivered
  • Homes England with partners are leading the development of one of Europe’s largest brownfield sites, York Central, to the rear of the station, providing pedestrian, cycle and bus infrastructure
  • the introduction of one of the largest electric bus fleets in the country and one of the first carbon neutral bus depots
  • creation of a new rail station in Haxby on the York to Scarborough line

Transport and traffic issues have a very high profile in York, where congestion and air quality levels are key concerns for the residents and our councillors. However, the city’s medieval road layout, and the presence of rivers and railways, create significant challenges.
