Caring for the City Walls

Monk Bar conservation

Monk Bar in York, shown with scaffolding to the northern and southern sides of the bar

Scaffolding has been installed on the north and south sides of Monk Bar due to limestone surface deterioration caused by January’s cold weather. This is a natural aging process and does not affect the bar’s structural stability. The scaffolding platform is in place as a safety measure to catch any debris.

A conservation project is planned to inspect, secure, repair, and repoint the stonework as needed. The bar remains open as usual while the scaffolding is in place.
