Apply for or replace a blind person's bus pass

If you are registered blind (severely sight impaired), you can apply for a blind person's bus pass, for free.

In addition to the benefits of the National Bus Pass, the blind person's pass offers:

  • free travel on all service buses in our area at any time of day
  • concessionary travel on 'York Park & Ride' buses at any time of day

Apply for a blind person's bus pass in person

You'll need to contact the Concessionary Bus Passes Team to make an appointment to apply in person at our Customer Centre.

You don't need to bring a photograph if you apply in person - we'll take your photograph while you wait.

You must bring:

  • proof of your address (photocopy of a current gas or electricity bill)
  • proof of your age (photocopy of your passport, birth certificate, medical card or a letter/statement from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP)
  • a photocopy of your Certificate of Vision Impairment showing that you are Severely Sight Impaired

Please allow 5 working days for your application to be processed.

Apply for a blind person's bus pass by post

To apply by post complete a disabled person's application form and include proof of your entitlement along with a passport sized photograph with your name on the back.

Please allow 10 working days for us to process your postal application.

Lost and stolen bus passes

If you've lost your pass you do not need to complete the application form or provide further supporting documents in order for a replacement to be issued.

Contact the Concessionary Bus Passes Team to request your replacement.

The charge for replacing a lost bus pass is £12.50. Stolen passes will be replaced free of charge on production of a valid police incident number.

Bus pass hot-listing

We'll electronically cancel your bus pass and 'hot-list' it if it's no longer valid for travel.

There are a number of reasons why a bus pass may be cancelled:

  • if you've previously reported your pass as lost or stolen and it has been replaced - make sure you use only your most recent pass and destroy any older ones
  • if we've contacted you requesting proof of continued eligibility and you've not provided it
  • if your pass has been used inappropriately, for example by a family member or friend

If a hot-listed pass is presented for travel, it will be rejected by the pass reader as it's not a valid card. You'll be asked to pay the fare for your journey and will have to hand over your bus pass, to be returned to us. This is to reduce the number of cancelled passes in circulation.

If you believe you are still eligible for free travel, contact the Concessionary Bus Passes Team as soon as possible.

You'll need to pay for travel until you receive your replacement bus pass.
