'Special educational needs' (SEN) describes any learning difficulty which means a child needs extra 'educational provision'.
Children might have a learning difficulty if they:
- have significantly greater difficulty learning than the majority of children their age
- have a disability which hinders them using general school facilities in their area
- require special provisions to help them with learning or to help them attend school
SEN assessments
If you think your child has special educational needs, you should discuss this in their place of education to arrange an assessment.
SEN services
We have a duty to enable pupils with special educational needs to:
- reach their full potential
- be included fully in their school communities
- make a successful transition to adulthood
To achieve these things, some pupils will need help from 'SEN Support' or other agencies. For a few children with severe or complex needs, we'll determine and arrange the special provisions available.
York's Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) Local Offer website
York's SEND Local Offer website helps parents and young people to see what's available for disabled children in the area and gives information on how to access services.
