In order to take account of wildlife we need to know what wildlife is in our area and where it lives. Despite having been studied for many years we still do not know everything related to wildlife in and around York and people are still finding new and exciting things.
To help us we always try to gain new information through:
- surveys done by ourselves
- surveys done by private individuals
- requesting surveys as part of development proposals
Most of the information we have is held by the North and East Yorkshire Ecological Data Centre based here in York.
Anyone can use their basic service although there may be a charge for more detailed work.
Wildlife websites
There are also several web based services providing information about wildlife in general. These include:
- National Biodiversity Network
- Naturenet
- Yorkshire Wildlife Trust
- Bat Conservation Trust
- Natural England
