2024 to 2025 council tax rates
These council tax figures apply to areas of York not covered by a Parish Council (unparished areas), from 1 April 2024 to 31 March 2025; they include contributions for both fire and police services. Charges for properties within a Parish Council area are slightly higher because they include a contribution towards your parish.

Annual council tax increases and the Adult Social Care Precept
Your 2024 to 2025 council tax bill shows 'percentage increases' for both your area charge and your Adult Social Care contribution. The way these percentages are calculated relates to the 'combined charge' for these elements, in the previous year.
To clarify the calculations, we've prepared an example:
Example based on 'Band D' property not covered by a parish council
In 2023 to 2024 the area charge was £1,360.54 and the Adult Social Care contribution was £209.88, so:
£1,360 + £209.88 = £1,570.42 combined charge
In 2024 to 2025 the area charge has a £46.95 increase, and the Adult Social Care contribution has a £31.41 increase. When these figures are divided by the previous year's combined charge the 'percentage increases' are revealed:
£46.95 ÷ £1,570.42 = 2.99% area charge
£31.41 ÷ £1,570.42 = 2.00% Adult Social Care Contribution
Adult Social Care Precept
Your council tax includes a charge towards Adult Social Care. This charge is known as the 'Adult Social Care Precept'; the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government have allowed councils to add this charge in each financial year since 2016. The charge will also be allowed in 2023 to 2024 and any subsequent year subject to the approval of the House of Commons. Download the Statutory Demand Regulation Amendment for Adult Social Care 2017.
Police and fire precepts
Your council tax includes charges towards policing and fire services in our area. These charges are known as the 'Police Precept' and the 'Fire Precept', and are set by North Yorkshire’s Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner.
