Tadcaster Road improvement scheme
The Tadcaster Road scheme is now complete.
Tadcaster Road is one of York’s busiest roads; there's a need to ensure the route can cope with current and future travel demands, in a safe and attractive environment, whilst supporting and encouraging more active or sustainable travel options, such as walking, cycling and using the bus.
The Tadcaster Road improvements will help to:
- reduce congestion
- improve air quality
- improve the health and wellbeing of residents
- improve the quality of the highway so it is fit-for-purpose
- address drainage defects (including 35 non-running gullies and several hundred metres of unmapped drainage)
- deliver improvements to drainage and reduce localised surface water flooding
- additional pedestrian crossings
- improve the route for motorists and cyclists
- support the local economy and the wider area
- ensure the road is maintenance-free for the next 10 years
- make improvements to support and encourage people to walk, cycle and use the bus
- create safer and more attractive routes for people on bikes and on foot
Funding improvements to Tadcaster Road
Funding for the Tadcaster Road improvement scheme came from 2 sources:
- West Yorkshire Combined Authority (WYCA) Transforming Cities Fund - providing £1.4 million to help transform gateways into towns and cities across the region by making it easier to walk, cycle and use public transport
- Department for Transport Local Highways Maintenance Challenge Fund - providing £5 million of funding to ensure the road is maintenance-free for the next 10 years
Improvements were delivered simultaneously so that disruption to residents, businesses and the users of Tadcaster Road was minimised and overall costs reduced.
