Vote in person

If you're voting in-person, you can only vote at your designated polling station on election day, during opening hours (7.00am to 10.00pm).

If you do not have an acceptable form of photo ID

If you do not have any acceptable forms of photo ID, you can apply for a Voter Authority Certificate (VAC). You should only apply for a VAC if you do not have any form of ID.

If you have changed your name, and the name on your ID is now different to your name on the Register of Electors, you should re-apply to register to vote under your new name or contact us to receive a change of name form.

If you need help applying for the free voter authority certificate, or to request an application form, contact Electoral Services.

The VAC is not accepted as proof of identity for any other purpose than voting.

Poll cards

You do not need a poll card to vote in-person at your polling station, although having it with you may speed the process.

If you have not received a poll card, you can check whether you're registered to vote and where your polling station is by contacting the electoral services team by email: electoral.services@york.gov.uk. Please ensure you include your full name and address in your email.

A poll card will be delivered to you prior to the election date letting you know:

  • your designated polling station
  • the date and times you can attend to cast your vote
  • the deadlines for applying for postal and proxy votes

You can also visit the Where Do I Vote website to find where your polling station is.

If you've received a poll card for a previous resident at your address please write "No longer at this address, return to sender" on it and put it in a post box, there is no need for a stamp, alternatively contact Electoral Services.
