As a tenant you'll have signed a tenancy agreement. The tenancy agreement which you have signed is a legally binding document. It sets out the details of your tenancy.
As a council tenant you have responsibilities. These include:
- paying your rent and any service charges in advance. Not falling into arrears
- occupying your property as your main and principal home. You cannot move out and let someone else live there
- telling us of changes in your circumstances for example, if you wish to add or remove a name from the tenancy. You must contact your Housing Management Officer for advice to see if this is possible
- providing the council with 4 weeks written notice if you wish to end your tenancy. Be aware that you are liable for the rent for this period and anything outstanding on your account
As a council tenant, internal painting and decoration is your responsibility and you'll need to provide access to your home so that we can:
- undertake any repairs
- make improvements
- carry out the annual gas service
- test any equipment
- test the electric
We'll give you reasonable notice when we need to access your property.
You may be responsible for some repairs. Find out which repairs you're responsible for online.
