Before making a YFAS application
Check whether you're eligible for emergency assistance from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) before applying for YFAS support.
Options include:
- applying for an advance if you’re waiting for your first benefit payment
- applying for a budgeting loan to help pay for essential items if you're already claiming benefits
In your application you'll need to tell us in detail what support you and/or your family need, why you need it and the emergency or exceptional circumstances.
Your application is an opportunity to provide us with a full picture of your circumstances. It's therefore important that you provide as much information as possible with your application.
We recommend gathering the required information and documentation ahead of completing the form.
You'll need to provide details of your household and income, including supporting documents for evidence.

You can provide the information needed to support your application, including bank statements, budget information and background information by:
- uploading PDF or JPG / GIF photos of your documents, when you complete the online form
- email to yfas@york.gov.uk
- post to YFAS, West Offices, Station Rise, York, YO1 6GA
- an in person appointment at West Offices (please book an appointment first)
